World On Fire

THE SCIENCE

World On Fire is an educational film, a high school level overview of the science of global warming and energy production. Beginning with some of the current and predicted effects of global warming, the film next covers the science of the greenhouse effect. Next, after explaining how electricity is produced, the film gives details about each of the fossil fuels: coal, oil and gas, including when and how they were produced in the earth and how they are recovered. Fracking is explained, as is the negative effects of each kind of fuel, particularly coal. Then comes a brief discussion of methods of saving energy. This is followed by the optimistic part of the film, a look at each of the non-polluting, renewable methods of producing electricity: solar, wind, nuclear, hydroelectric, tidal, biomass and geothermal. The movie ends with a cautious optimistic note that there is still time to alter our energy systems to avert the worst effects of global warming. But we must act; the question of whether and how we act is a political issue.
